  1. How does water power work?
  2. How does water make power? Pipeline/Power station. How does this make power?
  3. Why was that pipeline shaky?
  4. How do they make power for us up here in the north island?
  1. I learnt that pylons can store electricity and pylons can transfer electricity to farther places around the country.
  2. I learnt that the shafts connect to the turbines to the generators  by using magnets and coils of wire.
  3. I learnt that turbines is a way that power and electricity is made.

Day 2 - Vocab
Find the meanings for the following words.


dam

A dam is a type of barrier that prevents the water from going forward.
spillway

A spillway will pour out any extra water that is not necessarily needed.
earthquake-proof

Earthquake proof means that an object or building is irresistible to earthquakes
barrier

A barrier is similar to a dam, Not much can go forward if the barrier is there.
powerhouse

The powerhouse holds all the power making stuff. The shafts and the turbines are in there.
electricity

Electricity powers all our houses all the time. Electricity gives us access to many things that requires power.
turbines

The turbines spin around with the water. They spin 125 times a minute.
generators

The generators are also connected to the shafts. They mostly generate the power and electricity.
pylons

Pylons are basically power poles but bigger, it holds a lot of power lines together.
shafts

Shafts help the turbines work. The shafts are connected to the turbines to make them operate.
waterwheels

Waterwheels are a wheel that holds the water from the ground to the air and finally to the ground.



Day 3 - Questions
Research and answer these questions.

  1. How is electricity generated? It’s generated from the turbines and shafts. It’s sent out to the pylons
  2. What does the author think of the dam? How do you know? On Page 12, the author thinks that the dam is really big!
  3. Construct a flow chart to summarise how the power station converts the energy of water into electrical energy. ↓
